Six engines, drawn

You applied the mechanism test and still misread three. The fix isn't more history — it's seeing each engine as a shape: where the surplus is, how it turns into force, and who ends up fighting.

Your last drill said something precise. Nine known, zero lucky, three wrong — you never once coin-flipped, which means you reached for the mechanism test every single time and it handed you the wrong answer three times out of twelve. That is a much better problem than guessing. Guessing means no procedure; this means the procedure exists but the six engines aren't yet distinct enough in your head to tell neighbours apart. So today: no new eras, no new anchors. Just the six engines, drawn to the same template, and then a drill that strips out every name and date so there is nothing to fall back on but the mechanism itself.

Part oneOne template, six times

Every one of the six engines answers the same three questions in a different way. That is the whole trick: don't memorise six paragraphs, learn one shape and read off what changes.

The template. An era is not a span of years; it is an answer to these three questions. When the answer changes, the era changes — which is why hinges are hinges.

Part twoWhy the later ones feel harder — and they genuinely are

You predicted this before the drill: the recent eras will be hard to separate even with mechanisms. You were right, and it's worth seeing why rather than blaming your memory.

The compression problem. The engines were built to discriminate across millennia. Asked to separate 1914–45 from 1945–now, they are working at a resolution they were never designed for — and both of those eras run on industrial capacity and mass bureaucratic states.

So the honest rule: the six engines get you to the right century, not the right decade. For anything after 1900 you need finer instruments — what money is (gold standard, then Bretton Woods, then floating currencies after 1971), whether having an empire is normal or shameful, who the rival is, what the dominant medium is. Part threeThe three traps — each is a single question

You didn't misread engines that are far apart. Nobody confuses Assyrian tribute with the Marshall Plan. The misses live on three borders, and each border has one question that resolves it. Learn the question, not the era.

Trap 1 · Early modern ↔ Long 19th

Both have big armies, taxes, gunpowder, global trade. They look identical from outside.

What differs: whose name the soldiers fight in. An early-modern army is the king's — often literally rented, full of foreign mercenaries, and indifferent to whose flag it serves. A long-19th army is the nation's: conscripted citizens who are told the country is theirs, which is why it can be enormous and cheap and will keep fighting after a defeat.

Ask: would this make sense if the ruler swapped for a foreign prince tomorrow? If yes → early modern. If the population would riot at the idea → long 19th.

Trap 2 · Long 19th ↔ Catastrophe

This is the one that got the Spanish–American War in your last drill. Industrial weapons exist in both. Colonial wars in 1898 and world war in 1916 use recognisably similar rifles and ships.

What differs: whether whole societies are converted into the war. In the long 19th, wars are fought by armies at the edges of empires while the economy at home carries on, the stock market opens and civilians read about it in the paper. In the catastrophe, the factories, the food supply, the women's labour force and the entire national budget are inputs to the war — this is what "total war" actually means.

Ask: was there rationing? Were civilians a target? Was the whole economy an input? If no → long 19th, however modern the guns look.

Trap 3 · Catastrophe ↔ Postwar

The hardest, because the industrial-state machinery is the same on both sides of 1945. And it's the one that matters most for conversation, since most references you'll meet are post-1945.

What differs: whether the top powers can actually use their strength against each other. Before 1945 the answer is yes, and they do, twice. After 1945 nuclear weapons make direct great-power war suicidal, so force gets displaced — proxy wars, coups, space races, embargoes, arms races that are never used. Enormous militaries that mostly cannot be spent.

Ask: are the two strongest powers fighting each other directly? If yes → catastrophe. If they're fighting through someone else, or competing without shooting → postwar.

Part fourDrill: name the engine, with nothing to recall

Ten scenes. No names, no places, no dates — deliberately, so that knowing the event can't rescue you and the only tool available is the mechanism. Some are written to sit right on a trap border. Read the scene, ask the three template questions, then answer. Tick the guess box if you're flipping a coin.

    Part fiveDrill: run the engine forwards

    Knowing an engine means predicting from it. Three questions where the answer is deducible from the mechanism alone.

    Ask your teacher. If any engine still feels like a list of words rather than a picture, say which one and I'll take it apart on its own.
